SUMMARY:Trees as a Public Good Network meeting
DESCRIPTION:Trees-as-a-Public-Good (AKA TreesPG) holds networking meetings on the first and third Thursdays at 7 PM on Zoom. We plan legislative means to protect trees\, at both the state and local levels\, and discuss what actions can be taken to address specific trees under threat. \nJOIN THE TREES-AS-A-PUBLIC-GOOD NETWORK Please fill out this short form to get the Zoom link and join the TreesPG Network. The form is sponsored by Our Revolution MA (ORMA). \nTrees-as-a-Public-Good Network Overview \nTrees as a Public Good (TreesPG) is a network of organizations and individuals committed to preserving and expanding Massachusetts’ tree canopy.\nThe preservation and expansion of tree canopy is a crucial step in mitigating the global warming crisis due to fossil fuel use. Trees are the lungs of the planet\, constantly sequestering carbon from the atmosphere. A robust tree canopy also is fundamental to preserving ecosystems and biodiversity\, and to public health\, including reducing urban heat islands. \nTrees PG focuses on all trees\, in municipalities and forests and on public or private land through education and activism. We serve as a forum for organizations and concerned residents to gain support and develop collaborations to monitor local and state-level plans that advocate the preservation and expansion of Commonwealth tree canopy and oppose unwarranted tree removals and losses. We also coordinate sign-on letters and action alerts that address local/state legislative and administrative processes related to the tree canopy. Going forward\, we plan to develop a database of municipal and state tree oversight processes\, activities\, and best practices in order to promote better legislation and regulations related to trees in light of the climate emergency. \nThe Network convened in Spring 2022 after a forum on trees sponsored by the Climate Crisis working group of Our Revolution Massachusetts (ORMA): A Livable Commonwealth: Trees as a Public Good. \nThe Network meets on Zoom and is open to all who support its purpose. Join the TreesPG Network by filling out this form: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/tree-forum-networking-meeting?source=direct_link\nAnd follow us on Facebook\, https://www.facebook.com/TreesAsAPublicGood/.

SUMMARY:Join Our Campaign to Protect Wildlands in Massachusetts!
DESCRIPTION:Do you find solace in woods and other wild places? \nWould you like to join a positive\, collaborative campaign that will protect wildlife areas where you live and across the Commonwealth? \nClimate Action Now welcomes individuals and organizations ready to take action to identify and protect priority Wildlands to join our new campaign. Learn about the campaign here\, and sign up for our first campaign planning meeting on December 11 at 6:30pm here. \nClimate Action Now’s Regenerative Farming\, Forests and Food Systems group decided to launch the Wildlands campaign in response to the report Wildlands in New England: Past\, Present\, and Future and because we understand that: \n\nHealthy forests are key for carbon storage\, biodiversity\, regulating planetary systems and our well-being;\nOur state is 60% forested but only 2% has been preserved as Wildlands — much of which lacks permanent protection;\nIn a time when our ecosystem is under assault\, protecting nature is an act of love and a defense of life itself.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at our first meeting at 6:30pm on December 11th!

SUMMARY:Each Town Should Have a Park: 100 New National Parks for America with Michael Kellett
DESCRIPTION:Join The Walden Woods Project and RESTORE: The North Woods for a presentation from Michael Kellett about the campaign for new national parks\, why it is important\, and how we can build grassroots support to make this vision a reality. \n \nAbout the presentation: \nHenry David Thoreau had the far-sighted vision to declare\, “Each town should have a park.” Yet\, the people in most American towns still do not have ready access to a large public park. Potential future parks are being lost to resource exploitation and development. The New National Parks campaign has proposed 100 new national parks — at least one in each state. As the nation approaches its 250th celebration in 2026\, this bold vision would celebrate our natural heritage and bring the benefits of nature and the beloved tradition of national parks closer to millions of people. This would relieve pressure on existing parks\, help fight climate change\, and avoid biodiversity loss. We need to create more parks\, before it is too late. \nAbout Michael Kellett: \nMichael Kellett is executive director of RESTORE: The North Woods\, a New England-based nonprofit organization he co-founded in 1992. He has 40 years of experience in the land conservation movement\, including developing the proposal for a 3.2 million-acre Maine Woods National Park\, which led to President Obama’s 2016 designation of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. He has visited more than 250 national park areas across the country. \nWhen: December 4\, 7:00-8:00 pm EST. \nWhere: ZOOM \nRegistration required.  \nCo-sponsored by RESTORE: The North Woods.

SUMMARY:William Moomaw at Trees for Watertown’s Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We would be delighted if you can join us at Trees for Watertown’s Annual Meeting at the Watertown Free Public Library this Saturday\, November 9 (noon – 2 pm)\, to hear Dr. William R. Moomaw on why preservation of mature urban trees is so valuable in the face of climate change. \nDr. Moomaw has devoted the last 20 years to helping develop better local\, national and international understanding of the profoundly important role mature forests play in managing climate.  Some of you have heard Dr. Moomaw’s excellent presentation on proforestry.  His focus on Saturday will be specifically on the role mature city trees play in helping mitigate the damaging effects of climate change\, and why preservation of these stalwart urban climate defenders needs to be prioritized. \n\nDr. Moomaw’s message is a critically important one for policy-makers to hear right now.  As climate change bears down on us\, preservation and care of the urban forest needs to be given much higher priority.  See the Watertown News interview with Dr. William R. Moomaw for more. This event is free and open to the public.  It can also be viewed on Zoom (preregistration required).

SUMMARY:MassDEP’s Meeting on Water Quality Certificate for Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Project
DESCRIPTION:MassDEP’s Meeting on the Section 401 Water Quality Certificate In-person and Virtual \nIn Person – Shea Theater\, Turners Falls\, or by Zoom \nRegister Here – https://forms.office.com/g/eHAwXD9KAq \nAn ongoing eDNA study led by the Connecticut River Conservancy (CRC) has found persuasive evidence of Shortnose Sturgeon living in the Connecticut River above the Turners Falls Dam and on up into Vermont!  Shortnose Sturgeon are listed as an endangered species under the federal Endangered Species Act and are protected by MA law as well. \nRead more about the CRC study and its findings in this press release from CRC eDNA Confirms Shortnose Sturgeon in the Connecticut River Between Turners Falls MA and Bellows Falls VT (ctriver.org) and in this article from the Gazette. \nThe CRC findings are very significant for the relicensing of the Turners Falls Dam and Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Project\, both owned by FirstLight Power.  Read more here. \nFirstLight has denied the presence of Sturgeon above the dam\, even though citizens have reported seeing them and even catching them for years.  FirstLight even submitted its own\, deeply flawed\, eDNA Sturgeon study to FERC in 2018\, sampling only surface waters of the Connecticut River even though Sturgeon live in the deepest channels of the river. \nThis means that the licenses\, as proposed by FirstLight\, contain no protections for Sturgeon\, even though\, by FirstLight’s own admission\, fish\, larvae\, and eggs that get sucked up into the Northfield turbines have no expectation of survival! \nFirstLight has applied to MassDEP for a Section 401 Water Quality Certificate which FirstLight must have in order to obtain new licenses for its facilities.  We want MassDEP to require the addition of  significant protections for Shortnose Sturgeon to the FirstLight licenses or deny FirstLight’s application for a certificate altogether. \nAdvocate for Sturgeon and the CT River!!
